Metabolic Phenotyping / Type 1 Diabetes

Latent Phenotypic Stratification of Hypoglycemia Resilience

Unsupervised machine learning identifying latent physiological phenotypes of hypoglycemia resilience and counter-regulation in Type 1 Diabetes.

In Type 1 Diabetes, biological responses to falling blood glucose are not homogeneous. Our unsupervised phenotyping framework discovers latent physiological clusters—distinguishing individuals with intrinsic neuro-endocrine counter-regulatory resilience from those vulnerable to recurrent, life-threatening hypoglycemic collapse.

Ultra-Lightweight On-Device Execution: Our mathematical phenotyping models are engineered to be extremely lightweight, executing directly on users' smartphones in tandem with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) streams without requiring cloud connectivity or compromising patient privacy.

CRITICAL CLINICAL CRISIS

The Rate-Limiting Barrier in Diabetes Management

Iatrogenic hypoglycemia remains the single most feared complication in insulin-treated diabetes. A one-size-fits-all approach fails to distinguish patients with robust autonomic counter-regulation from those heading toward unawareness and nocturnal catastrophe.

ACUTE HAZARD

Hypoglycemia Unawareness & Autonomic Failure

Up to 25% of individuals with long-standing Type 1 Diabetes develop defective counter-regulation and hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (HAAF), losing early adrenergic warning symptoms (sweating, palpitations) entirely until motor collapse occurs.

NOCTURNAL CRISIS

Nocturnal Seizures & Mortality

Over 50% of severe hypoglycemic events occur overnight during sleep. Undetected nocturnal hypoglycemia causes seizures, neuroglycopenic coma, cardiac arrhythmias, and Dead-in-Bed syndrome in young, otherwise healthy patients.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FEAR

The Compensatory Hyperglycemia Trap

Fear of hypoglycemia forces patients to purposefully maintain chronically elevated blood glucose levels to feel safe, directly accelerating irreversible microvascular damage, diabetic retinopathy, and chronic nephropathy.

CLINICAL DEFICIT

Failure of Uniform Clinical Guidance

Current guidelines treat all diabetes patients homogeneously based on average HbA1c metrics. This obscures the critical physiological reality: identical insulin dosages cause severe crash in vulnerable patients while leaving resilient patients completely stable.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions & Clinical Context

What distinguishes a resilient patient from a vulnerable patient? +

Resilient patients maintain intact physiological defenses: their hepatic glucose production responds promptly to downward excursions, exhibiting tighter glycemic trajectories with lower MAGE scores. Vulnerable individuals exhibit impaired autonomic response, slower rebound kinetics, and prolonged time spent in severe hypoglycemia.

Can an individual transition from vulnerable back to resilient? +

Clinical literature indicates that strict avoidance of hypoglycemia for 4 to 8 weeks can partially restore autonomic counter-regulatory awareness. By flagging vulnerable patients early, our framework enables targeted avoidance protocols to facilitate neuro-endocrine recovery.

Does this require cloud processing or custom hardware? +

No. The mathematical phenotyping model is exceptionally lightweight and operates on standard smartphone processors directly receiving data from commercial CGM Bluetooth streams, ensuring offline privacy and instant responsiveness.
